How It Stacks Up

Merchandising your tabletops and shelves well is a very important ingredient when it comes to cooking up a chic room. I personally like a layered up tablescape and shelves exuberantly full. Books add good visual weight, grouped by spine color they become color blocks, perfect on their sides as an “alley-oop” for an object or “doo-dad” . Try using odd numbers when working with groupings 1’s, 3’s and 5’s are best… but pairs of things are also good in the mix if it’s a matching pair.
Another good idea is a shelf of books, a shelf of frames, a collection, or what-have-you, then another shelf of books… alternating until all shelves are full. The books help with consistency and allow for the “bric-a-brac” to be a bit more random. If you have deep shelves and lots of books try filling the entire case with books, and adding an embellishment or grouping every so often in front of the books, small paintings, photo’s and other flat items work best, but experiment with what you have.
