Cabin (obsession)

June 2, 2011

Would this little gem of a kitchen in Lake Tahoe, CA count as a White Kitchen? I thinking yes. It’s actually a white washed horizontal knotty pine kitchen. And I love it. Favorite elements… board faced cabinet doors with the old-time hardware, the metal banding that wraps the counter-top and of course the vintage fridge and stove. I think the appliances have to be 50 years old, or more! The cabin has been in my family for nearly 50 years ( family will no doubt correct that figure shortly ) and I know we’ve never replaced them. This cabin is so near and dear to my heart. I think this little house is the reason for my obsession with little houses. While it’s big by little house standards ( 2 bedrooms ) it is still in fact tiny, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love the smell of this house, I love the sound of the screen door slamming shut, and I especially love the noise the spring in the oven door make when it’s closed.

It’s been in our family since just before you were born, and was built in 1950 as I recall. We measured it once and it’s about 680 sf. I love little houses, too, and all the things you list. I think there are 114 tiles (probably asbestos…) in the front room ceiling. I also like the knothole “eyes” in the living room ceiling, and that you HAVE to use the bathroom doorknob or you’ll pinch your fingers on the edge of the sink.
