West Elm & Unfinished Floors

September 9, 2010

If your “look” is spare and somewhat modern, you need to shop West Elm.  Now I’m the first to admit that the furniture they carry is not heirloom quality, but the designs are smart and good-looking and you can’t beat the pricing, even with shipping.  Take a look at the Cube Cutout Storage collection.  This hight design furniture – available in two finishes, light and dark, really looks like expensive italian furniture from Design Within Reach or Roche Bobois.  I actually really like these pieces paired with the unfinished wood floors, a hot trend right now.

UNfinished floors? yes.  Sand off the varnish and the stain and let your floors age naturally.  Embrace the Wabi-Sabi.  Whats Wabi-Sabi? Pared down to its barest essence, Wabi-Sabi is the Japanese art of finding beauty in imperfection and profundity in nature, of accepting the natural cycle of growth, decay, and death.  Of course the floors will absorb stains and dirt, traffic patterns my show but thats the beauty of the unfinished floor.  Let it be, embrace the imperfection.  It’s so rustic modren, and you know I’m all about rustic modern.
