White Kitchens & Counter Tops

June 27, 2010

Who else loves this kitchen?  probably all of you, I mean look at the attention to detail… It’s literally from ceiling to floor.  The special coffered ceiling with that amazing relief work sets a tone that was clearly followed.  Love the big metal hood and think painting it out is a fresh twist, stainless would have been a bit of a ho-hum and copper might have read dark and too rustic for this space, white was the perfect choice.  The hood also allows for the La Cornue stove ( at least I think it’s La Cornue ) to be the star of the show.  La Cornue is known for superb workmanship and styling that have distinguished the French company’s stoves for nearly a century.  Williams Sonoma carries a smaller version proportioned to fit 24″ deep cabinets at a mere $8600.00.  The professional-style cooktop is configured with five powerful gas burners. Below it, two electric convection ovens feature French side-swing doors; one offers seven functions, including convection and conventional baking/roasting options as well as broiling and defrosting. Proportioned for use with standard 24″ deep base cabinets, the stove can be adjusted in height. Four oven racks are included… for that price they better be.  La Cornue CornuFé Stove, Stainless Steel with Chrome & Brass

This post is about the kitchen not just one AMAZING appliance, but allow me to digress…   focus you attention on the counter top and its elegant corner detail.  I love that they didn’t stop at your typical ogee edge and added the notched and rounded corner, another elegant detail.  However, the choice of an edge is no small detail. A proper edge profile adds impact to the beauty of a natural stone slab surface and helps integrate it into the overall design of the room. Consider the space where the slab will be used. If soft, rounded corners are common, consider using rounded edges like a bullnose or pencil edge to tie things together. If straight lines are predominate, then squared-off edges could be used – straight, beveled and chamfer edges are all possibilities. Roman O’gee and other specialty edges often compliment cabinet trim or other architectural details. With the right edge detail, your slab is sure to make a striking and lasting impression. Edges are available in a variety of thicknesses – ranging from 3/4” and 1-1/4“ thick to 1 1/2” laminated. Check with your local fabricator for more information regarding edge treatments. Final thoughts:  I have to comment on is the pillowed stainless refrigerator/freezer, again the special thought put into the textured detail turns the mundane into something celebrated.  And, I have to give a shout out to the pot racks and island, hello?  They humanize this kitchen, and add warmth by vertue of their materials and patina. There is a wonderful contrast between the old pots, worn wood and the crisp white of the kitchen.  This white kitchen gets two thumbs up!
