It must be in Kyoto, right? Wrong! Then, of course, it has to be in Tokyo. Try again. The best Japanese garden in the world is at Adachi Museum of Art, in the small town of Yasugi, in Shimane prefecture of western Japan. Japanese gardens are ranked by the Journal of Japanese Gardening which evaluates gardens worldwide. Most of the top ten gardens are in Kyoto, but the number one spot for six years in a row is the garden at Adachi Museum. This is in part due to the museum’s constant trimming schedule that involves all the staff. The museum’s founder Adachi Zenko travelled throughout Japan, collecting rocks and plants for the garden. There are a total of six gardens, covering 165, 000 square meters. The garden can be enjoyed all year and has a distinct look in each season. The museum regularly hosts apprentices from all over the world to study gardening. The museum is worth a visit for the garden, but also has an excellent collection of art. I would love to see this one in the snow!

Inspired by a small antique sofa, its flared arms are typical of late Sheraton sofas while its form is reminiscent of early 20th Century Danish designs. Settees and window seats of these eras had subtle and refined proportions which are reflected in the styling on the Gentry series. The sofa, loveseat, and chair are available Made to Measure from 28 to 120 inch lengths. The Made to Measure ottoman is available from 18 to 60 inches in length and depth. There are many finishes available, Dark Walnut finish shown. Oh and don’t worry, two 22-inch white goose feather throw pillows are included.

H. Robsjohn-Gibbings (1905-1976) was a British born architect and furniture designer, who studied architecture at London University. He afterwards worked briefly as a naval architect, designing ocean liner interiors, and then as art director for a motion picture studio. In 1926, he became a salesman for an antiques dealer who specialized in Elizabethan and Jacobean furniture. In the late 1930s and 40s, he was the most important decorator in America. He opened a shop on Madison Ave in 1936 and proceeded to design houses for people like Doris Duke, Alfred A. Knopf and Thelma Chrysler Foy. From 1943-56, he worked as a designer for the Widdicomb furniture company in Grand Rapids. Then in 1960, he net Greek cabinetmakers Susan and Eleftherios Saridis.
